LED lighting makes people feel better by improving sleep and speeding up recovery. Patient rooms subtly change colour through the day to mirror the body’s circadian rhythm – blue tones to promote wakefulness, warmer hues to encourage rest.
2. Peace and quiet
Our SoundLab technology created 3D audio simulations of jet aircraft so we could design out some of the noise from nearby Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and screening reduced sounds from corridors and neighbouring rooms – particularly for new-borns in the neonatal intensive care unit.
3. Health screening
Integrated smart technology gives patients control of their environment. A large screen at the foot of the bed allows them to make video calls to family and nursing staff, order food, and adjust the temperature, lighting and blinds.
4. Cool design
We used computer modelling to design the rooms’ air conditioning systems for excellent circulation, without drafts, promoting good infection control in a comfortable environment.
Carefully placed window shading limits excessive light and heat without obscuring the view, while motorised blinds give patients control over their privacy and the ability to reduce glare from the sun, all without leaving their bed.
